Alexander Zverev reveals: I “shouldn’t care” about Germany

While the German Davis Cup team is currently fighting for a place in the knockout stages at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum, Alexander Zverev only has the role of spectator. The German number one suffers from bone edema in his foot. The fact that he still shines with his presence and cheers on his colleagues was not a matter of course for a long time.

In the “OMR Podcast“The Hamburger has now given some surprising insights into his sports life and revealed why he used to attach less importance to appearances at the Davis Cup and Co.

“We have a group on WhatsApp called ‘Monaco-Stammtisch’,” Zverev gave an insight into the life of high society.

Next to him in the group would be “all the footballers who play for Monaco” and “all the Formula 1 drivers” as well as a person who would have been less expected in this list: Robert Geiss.

The entrepreneur, who made it to a millionaire with fashion companies and became famous as the face of the reality soap “Die Geissens”, is “one of the funniest,” says Zverev.

Alexander Zverev should “actually not matter” to Germany

In the interview, Germany’s best tennis player also commented on a topic that has already been hotly debated in the media: his perception in Germany.

His old management worked to present him as a “world star who doesn’t really care about Germany,” said Zverev. That bothered him “a bit”, but he simply had no say, the Olympic champion explained. Ultimately, everything culminated in a legal dispute that he won.

At the beginning of 2021, however, he decided to “take everything into his own hands” and opened his own management together with his brother Mischa and pole vault legend Sergey Bubka.

The first decision was that “Germany is very, very important”, the German audience would get to know him better and he would “become one” with the German people, according to Zeverev.

Today, he no longer chooses cooperation partners based on money alone, but consciously chooses what appeals to him.
