Alexander Zverev hits the referee’s chair – and is disqualified

Germany’s best tennis player loses in doubles at the tournament in Acapulco and then freaks out completely. The consequences follow directly – he is rigorously punished by the ATP.

Once, twice, three times. Alexander Zverev strikes again and again. The racket of Germany’s best tennis player keeps crashing into the referee’s chair, almost hitting his feet. Zverev is pissed off and has completely lost his temper.

He sits down on the bench and curses: “You fucking idiot” (“You damn idiot”, editor’s note) can no longer be gotten. Stand up and hit the chair with the bat again. The crowd at the ATP tournament in Acapulco boos. Now the consequences are clear: Alexander Zverev has been disqualified for “unsportsmanlike conduct”.

What a freak of the world number three last night.

What happened?

Zverev played doubles with Brazilian Marcelo Melo against the duo Lloyd Glasspool/Harri Heliövaara (Great Britain/Finland) last night. At the end of the match, there was apparently a controversial decision that led to three match points for Glasspool/Heliovaara – and ultimately a 2-6, 6-4, 6-10 defeat for Zverev and Melo in the super tie-break. This apparently led to the freaking out of the hamburger. And now for the disqualification.

A real scandal – and that just a day after the 24-year-old had won in a record match 3: 6, 7: 6 (12:10), 6: 2 against the American Jenson Brooksby (Here you can read more about it). Actually, the German round of 16 duel with Munich’s Peter Gojowczyk was supposed to happen on Thursday night. Now everything is over.
