Alert phase 1 remains in force: Markermeer water level continues to rise

It is still alarm phase 1 due to the high water level of the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer, the water board reported on Friday afternoon. The water level in the IJsselmeer has dropped, but that in the Markermeer is still gradually rising.

The water in the IJsselmeer has dropped because it has been possible to drain well recently. This means that the excess water is discharged to the Wadden Sea via the locks at Den Oever and Kornwerderzand.

“There was also one occasion when the tide was blown over, because the Wadden Sea remained lower at high tide than the water level in the IJsselmeer,” Rijkswaterstaat explains. The IJsselmeer is expected to continue to fluctuate around +47 in the coming days. The water level in the IJsselmeer will then drop further in early 2024.

Markermeer rise

The Markermeer is still gradually rising, because it is not yet possible to drain to the IJsselmeer. “It may be possible to discharge something into the IJsselmeer again in a few days, depending on the water level and a favorable wind,” says Rijkswaterstaat.

Various measures have already been taken in our province. The dikes are inspected and measures are taken where necessary. The water board reports that the Large Lock in Hoorn and the lock at Broekerhaven in Stede Broec will remain closed for the time being today to prevent the risk of flooding in the city center.

There is an increased risk of flooding in the areas outside the dykes of the Markermeer due to the high water level in combination with the strong wind.

The residents of the lighthouse Het Paard van Marken, which is located in the middle of the Markermeer, report that the water is 2 cm higher than this morning. “That doesn’t seem like much, but with the current water level it is a lot,” says the resident.

In Volendam, residents at the Zuideinde have placed sandbags at the bottom of the dike.
