Aldi in Groningen cannot get rid of Vietnamese spring roll baker

Supermarket Aldi in the Vinkhuizen shopping center can jump high and low; the Vietnamese spring roll baker Danny Nuyen, who stands with his stall in front of the Aldi, can remain there until 2035. This is evident from a ruling by the Council of State.

The German supermarket chain filed a lawsuit against the municipality of Groningen at the highest administrative court. At stake was the residence permit that the mayor and aldermen granted to Nuyen for fifteen years.

According to Aldi, the spring roll stand is in the way of an extension at the front of the store. The group wants to make a semi-circular entrance there. However, the Council of State agrees with the municipality of Groningen that the expansion plan will most likely not be able to be implemented. The municipality does not want to cooperate.

Groningen believes that Aldi has not demonstrated that the expansion of the store results in a structural improvement of the shopping plaza. As a result, the plan failed at the municipality. Aldi also tried to shorten the validity of the location permit from fifteen years to two years at the Council of State. The Council of State did not agree with this either.
