Alderman Mandy Elfferich of the municipality of Landsmeer has announced in a peppery letter that she will immediately resign from her duties. She is angry because her integrity is being questioned by ‘some councillors’. Since the municipal elections she was both councilor and alderman, now she continues as a councilor alone.
In the letter she mentions, among other things, the council meeting on April 21. She did not like the ‘tone’ of some councilors: “The willful damage of fellow councilors and, for example, also openly questioning my integrity without any reason or basis for doing so, has nothing to do with democracy or politics. context, I cannot and do not want to function as an alderman.”
She sees that a few important topics will be discussed in the council in the coming months. And that while there is still no prospect of a new coalition since the municipal elections. “With the process and coalition negotiations taking place completely behind closed doors, uncertainty about this duration is increasing.”

Normally, a council does not make any major decisions in the time that there is no new coalition, and therefore no changes to existing policy. While Elfferich actually wants to: “With the recent felling of trees without replanting, I have reached a point where I, as a board member, have to implement a council decision while I cannot (any longer) unite there politically and personally. I do not expect this example to stand alone. will stand.”
Mayor Léon de Lange will take over her duties for the time being. The city council is considering the appointment of a new alderman.
