‘Alcarràs’, ‘As Bestas’ and ‘Cinco lobitos’, shortlisted to represent Spain at the Oscars

Alcarràs’, by Carla Simón; ‘As Bestas’, by Rodrigo SorogoyenY ‘Five little wolves’, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, are the three films that have been shortlisted by academics for represent Spain at the Oscars. As the president of the institution, Fernando Méndez-Leite, has rightly said, it is a year with a particularly high level and there were many possible candidates that have been left out, such as ‘One year, one night’, by Isaki Lacuesta; ‘In the margins’, by Juan Diego Botto, or ‘La maternal’, by Pilar Palomero.

But the truth is that this preselection is indisputable. It was clear that ‘Alcarràs’ was going to be on the list. Carla Simón’s film has become a small cinematographic event and also has the backing of having won the Golden Bear in Berlin. As for ‘As Bestas’, it had its ‘premiere’ at the last Cannes Festival and is a powerful rural ‘thriller’, with an atmosphere of progressive tension and discomfort and with great performances by the French Marina Foïs and Denis Menochet and the Spanish Luis Zahera. The film is still pending release in Spain.

Lastly, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s feature debut, ‘Cinco lobitos’, has become one of the favorites of the Spanish public, for narrating motherhood and mother-child relationships with great delicacy and transparency.

The academics have had to assess 42 titles, those released between January 1 and November 30, 2022. The film that will finally be in charge of representing Spain in the next edition of the Hollywood Academy Awards will be released on September 13th.
