Carlos Alcaraz was eliminated on Sunday in the eighth finals of Wimbledon. The Spanish top talent lost in four sets to the Italian Jannik Sinner. David Goffin reached the quarterfinals for the second time in his career earlier today. The Belgian settled in a heavy fight with the American Frances Tiafoe.
The only nineteen-year-old Alcaraz, the number seven in the world, was almost the entire game behind the facts against Sinner, who is six places lower. It was 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 (8) and 6-3 in 3 hours and 38 minutes.
For Alcaraz it was the second time that he participated in Wimbledon and the first time that he was in the eighth finals. Last year he stranded in the second round of the London Grand Slam tournament.
The tenth-seeded Sinner equals his best Grand Slam result of his career with a place in the last eight. At this year’s Australian Open and at Roland Garros in 2020, the quarterfinals were also his final station.
Sinner may face Tim van Rijthoven in the quarterfinals. The Dutchman must provide a huge stunt on Sunday evening by beating Novak Djokovic.
David Goffin reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the second time in his career.
Goffin reaches quarter-finals after a great fight
Goffin, 31, was too strong for Tiafoe, seven years younger, in five sets: 7-6 (3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4 and 7-5. The match on the grass in London lasted 4 hours and 37 minutes.
For Goffin it is the first time since 2019 that he is in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament. The number 58 in the world then also made it to the last eight at Wimbledon. That was also the final station.
Goffin will face Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinals. The Briton got rid of the American Tommy Paul quite easily: 6-4, 7-5 and 6-4. Later in the evening, Tim van Rijthoven will play against Novak Djokovic for a place in the quarterfinals.
Tatjana Maria reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.
Three surprises in quarter-finals women’s tournament
In the women’s tournament, three surprising names are in the quarterfinals. The German Tatjana Maria (WTA-103), her compatriot Jule Niemeier (WTA-97) and the Czech Marie Bouzková (WTA-66) joined the last eight.
Maria survived two match points in the second set against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and won 5-7, 7-5 and 7-5. She will face her compatriot Niemeier in her next match, who eliminated the last British in the tournament with Heather Watson: 6-2 and 6-4.
Like Maria and Niemeier, Bouzková also reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. She beat the French Caroline Garcia 7-5 and 6-2 and now faces third seed Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian put Elise Mertens from Belgium aside with 7-6 (9) and 6-4.
