Alcaraz climbs the world rankings

Despite his defeat in the final in Hamburg, shooting star Carlos Alcaraz has climbed one place in the world rankings.

The 19-year-old Spaniard is listed in fifth place, making him the youngest player in the quintet of the top five tennis professionals since Rafael Nadal 17 years ago. Hamburg winner Lorenzo Musetti (20) from Italy jumped 31 places to 31st place after his first ATP title.

The best German is the still injured Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in second place behind leader Daniil Medvedev from Russia. Grand Slam record champion Nadal (Spain) is third, Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic (Serbia) is still seventh.

For women, there were hardly any changes among the top players. Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who is playing a home game in Warsaw this week, is leading ahead of Hamburg finalist Anett Kontaveit from Estonia.

Their conqueror Bernarda Pera (USA) improved by 27 places to rank 54. Angelique Kerber, the best German, took 31st place.
