This week it’s all about new records from Animal Collective, Mitski and Black Country, New Road.

Unfortunately, in the second decade of its existence, the Animal Collective has muddled along more or less irrelevantly, according to ME author Steffen Greiner. All the better that their new record TIME SKIFFS is based more on the early versions of the collective.

Mitski’s new record LAUREL HELL is a direct response to her previous album BE THE COWBOY, being a little more defensive but complex at the same time. It’s an album about love, relationships, and the shades of gray that creep in there. Musically, the record can be described as more introspective, even if some songs come pretty close to funky 80s dance pop.

London-based ensemble Black Country, New Road have reshuffled the deck for their second album, ANTS FROM UP THERE. the Singer Isaac Wood adapts more to the structures of the group, which also has changed its tonality: Everything that scratches and makes noise is kept in check, and the saxophone, violin and piano benefit from this.
