Even in the prestige duel at Bayern Munich, Alba Berlin was unable to break the spell despite a committed performance and, after a compulsory Corona break of more than two weeks, conceded the fifth defeat in a row. The German champions lost the gripping Euroleague main round game in the Audi Dome 56:62 (24:26).
Thanks to the decision of the Bavarian state government to allow fans in the arena, tickets could be sold again for the first time this year. The 1,346 visitors saw an open first half, which particularly impressed at the beginning with the technically skilled and fast-paced game of both teams.
Bayern’s defense triumphs
After the break, Alba pulled away with a 14:1 run. The Bavarians around top scorer Vladimir Lucic (19 points), recently successful in all competitions four times in a row, caught up again before the last quarter. The game was now mainly characterized by the defensive and by a lot of physique. Offensively, mistakes increased, the lead changed several times, and Bayern’s Vladimir Lucic finally scored the decisive points. First the forward scored to 58:52, then he followed up with a successful free throw.
With eleven wins and eleven defeats each, Munich is still close to the play-off places, Berlin (6:15) has poor prospects. The guests’ best throwers were national players Maodo Lo and Jaleen Smith. However, Alba’s disappointment was limited despite the lost prestige duel. This is how coach Israel Gonzalez analyzed the TV station MagentaTV’s microphone: “In the end we weren’t fresh. But I’m happy with the effort my players put in.”
Alba continues in the basketball Bundesliga on Sunday, January 30, in Würzburg (3 p.m.). The next Euroleague game against Kazan follows on Wednesday, February 2 (8 p.m.).
