Alba Berlin’s decline in the EuroLeague continues.
In the basement duel, the team led by basketball world champion Johannes Thiemann lost to the previous bottom team ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne 68:73 (35:43) and fell to the bottom of the table. FC Bayern Munich, on the other hand, defeated Partizan Belgrade 94:85 (53:51) and ended its negative run in the competition after four defeats in a row.
“Regardless of the table situation, the defeat is very, very bitter,” said captain Thiemann, Alba’s best scorer with 16 points, after the game on “MagentaSport”. In the first half, the hosts were behind from the start, which was up to 15 points in the first half. “We completely overslept the first quarter,” Thiemann said angrily, “I don’t know what was going on either.”
Berlin fought back and a 12-0 run after the break gave them their first lead (47:43). But at the end of a game that was close until the final siren there was the seventh defeat in the eighth game. Alba thus took over the red lantern from Lyon, which moved to second-to-last place in the table.
The German Cup winner from Munich could meanwhile rely on his guard duo Carsen Edwards (21 points) and Sylvain Francisco (17 points). With three wins after eight matchdays, Bayern are in 15th place.
