Alanis Morissette has announced a new album. This is an “ordinary” studio record with new songs, but a meditation album. THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM, as it is titled, is scheduled for release on June 17th. The Canadian musician also lets you hear a first, almost exclusively instrumental piece from it – of course, this did not become a radio hit.
Morissette wrote THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM with Darksides Dave Harrington, it includes eleven different meditations.
Morissette says about it: “Meditation calms my inner being to the point where I can access ideas, vision, inspiration and hear my own self. In a way, music is like a portal for me, an invitation into a state of being that I’m not normally in. Making the album allowed me to stay connected and accountable when I felt like I was going to just disintegrate and disappear during the Corona period.”
Accordingly, THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM should also be made available in the mental health app “Calm”. Morissette is not the first rock musician to choose this distribution channel: in 2021 Arcade Fire released a 45-minute instrumental piece within the meditation app Headspace.
But if you prefer Alanis Morissette as a rock musician, you’ll soon get your money’s worth: This year she’s celebrating the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough album JAGGED LITTLE PILL with her own tour. This was released in 1995, actually 27 years ago, was awarded Album of the Year and Best Rock Album at the 1996 Grammys and is one of the best-selling records in the world. She has released nine albums in her career so far.
