Aki Palsanmäki does not want these items for auction: “They are not good for anyone”

Auctioneer Aki Palsanmäki knows that the prices of some products have dropped dramatically.

Aki and Heli Palsanmäki have run the auction bearing their surname since 2006. Starred by the couple Finland’s auction emperor program, on the other hand, has been made for more than 10 years.

Over the years, the Palsanmäkis have learned what sells at their auction – and what kind of stuff goes unsold. The trends of the time are also strongly reflected in the goods market.

Aki says that five years ago, Arabia’s coffee tableware with a barrel stamp did their business without exception. Now the six cups and saucers from Arabia’s Kesäkukka series may not be sold.

Certain Arabian products have held their ground, but the “basic Arabians” of the 40s and 60s are not the most popular sales items.

What else does Aki not sell?

– Utility furniture is currently such that it is not suitable for anyone. A bookshelf, a double bed, a dining set in the kitchen, a fabric sofa that the cat has scratched a little, Aki lists.

The situation is different with design furniture. They have their buyers.

The situation has also changed with antique furniture. Aki describes that while an antique clapboard drawing could once go for 200–300 euros, now its price might be only 20–30 euros.

The auctioneer says that he takes antique furniture for sale from time to time – especially if the customer is sad with them in the yard and they are sold at a percentage sale.

Special offer

Selling books also has its challenges.

– Encyclopedia series – not good for anyone. Even if they had paid 20,000 marks during the marka period, says Aki.

Aki states that certain books, such as biographies, can sell. He gives examples Vesa-Matti Loirin and Mika Häkkinen Books. According to Aki, war-themed books also sell well.

Aki doesn’t want to auction off old household appliances either. As examples, he raises a coffee maker, a universal machine and a toaster.

– After all, we were offered a used electric toothbrush during the shooting of the program, but who would put it in their mouth, even if they bought a new head for it, Aki grins.

Aki believes that thanks to the TV show, people have a better idea of what to offer to the auction in general.

– It’s just that the offering of crap has decreased. Yes, in the early years, quite a lot of goods were offered. I almost cried when someone saw that I was cleaning the garage a bit, Aki tells about the situation of the past years.
