Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki has won the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival with his film Dead leaves. He has directed, written and produced the film.
Tragicomedy Dead leaves was characterized as a topical and sympathetic love story. The film also gathered praise from the international press.
The film came out on top with 3.1 stars on the jury grid published by Screen Daily, i.e. the international critics’ scoring table of the films in the competition series of the festival (scale 1–4 stars).
The evaluations mention, among other things, “Kaurismäki’s skillful handprint”. The film’s humor and acting have also been praised, among other things. The film has been praised, among other things, as a “real gem”.
Kaurismäki left the film festival earlier for Finland. However, the film’s main stars will be there in Cannes Jussi Vatanen and Alma Pöysti.
The love film shot in Helsinki is the fourth part of Kaurismäki’s working-class film series (Shadows in Paradise, Ariel and the Matchmaker Girl). The film is Kaurismäki’s 20th feature film.
Dead leaves -film is coming to its national cinema premiere in Finland next fall.
