Ajax Women misses Eredivisie Cup; FC Twente too strong after a seven-clapper

Ajax Women failed to win the Eredivisie Cup at the expense of FC Twente. At their own Sportpark De Toekomst, it became 3-4 after an exciting final.

Fenna Kalma was already a tease for Ajax Women in the first fifteen minutes. She scored twice for the team from Enschede. The first goal was thrown into her lap by the fumbling of Ajax’s defenders. With the second goal she trumped Kay-lee de Sanders: 0-2.

However, the team from Amsterdam did not let themselves be fooled and fought back. First a corner from Sherida Spitse went into the own goal via Marit Auée and just before the break Rosa van Gool tapped in a cross from Ashleigh Weerden: 2-2. Goalkeeper Dionne van der Wal made a feline save just before the break.

As bad as Ajax’s start was in the first half, the second started as well. Captain Spitse shot, on her birthday, with sharp: 3-2. Substitute Suzanne Giesen, however, left Ajax with a sour aftertaste on this Pentecost Monday.

The Twente player first made 3-3 and after a mistake by Lisa Doorn she also scored the winning goal: 3-4. Chasity Grant was still close to the equalizer, but it was no longer possible for Ajax.

Earlier this month, Ajax Women did win the national championship. That was the first time in five years. A tribute from the club and the municipality was canceled, but an alternative will be held this Monday.
