Calvin Bassey does not travel with the selection of Ajax, which is going to Germany for a training camp. The 23-year-old central defender seems to be given the freedom by the club to complete his transfer to England.
Last Saturday, Bassey also did not participate in the friendly match against Anderlecht (3-0, loss). Ajax reached an agreement earlier that day on a transfer with Fulham, which plays in the Premier League. The Nigerian international still has to come to an agreement with the Londoners himself and has now been given time off. Ajax coach Maurice Steijn already emphasized that Bassey did not have to count on much playing time this season.
Bassey came over from Rangers FC from Scotland last summer for an amount of 23 million euros. He seemed to be able to live up to the sky-high expectations in the first games, but during the season Bassey increasingly fell through the ice. At the end of the season, he increasingly had to sit on the bench at Ajax.
Ajax’s 28-man selection for the training camp: Gero Rulli, Jay Gorter, Charlie Setford, Sten Kremers, Owen Wijndal, Devyne Rensch, Jorrel Hato, Anass Salah-Eddine, Olivier Aertssen, Tristan Gooijer, Mateja Milovanović, Diyae Jermoumi, Davy Klaassen, Kenneth Taylor, Mohammed Kudus, Branco van den Boomen, Benjamin Tahirović, Silvano Vos, Steven Bergwijn, Brian Brobbey, Kian Fitz-Jim, Steven Berghuis, Francisco Conceição, Mohamed Daramy, Kristian Hlynsson, Christian Rasmussen, Mika Godts, Gabriel Misehouy
Steijn takes a total of 28 players to Germany. As of today, the club resides in Herzaugenrauch, near Nürnberg on the Adidas World of Sports Campus. An exhibition game with FC Augsburg will be played there next Saturday.
