Ajax striker Antony becomes most expensive Eredivisie player ever with transfer to Manchester United

Ajax and Manchester United have reached an agreement on the transfer of Antony Matheus dos Santos. International sports media, including The Telegraph, Football International and the BBC, reported Sunday evening. The transfer of the Brazilian attacker would involve an amount of at least 95 million euros, which could rise to 100 million euros. Never before has an Eredivisie player been sold for such a high amount. 22-year-old Antony signs a five-year contract in Manchester, where he will play under his former coach Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United have been after the agile winger of Ajax for some time. Earlier, the club made an offer of 90 million euros, but that was not accepted by Ajax. Now the club is tackling. Antony already had a personal agreement with Manchester United and wanted to leave, he made clear to the club management of Ajax two weeks ago. He did not play in the past two league matches for the team from Amsterdam pending a transfer. Both clubs have until Thursday, when the summer transfer window for English clubs ends, to complete the transfer paperwork.

Antony came in the summer of 2020 for a (basic) amount of 15.75 million euros from São Paulo FC, the club in his homeland where he was trained. Ajax has to hand over part of the transfer fee to Antony’s old club. In two years, Antony played 57 league matches for Ajax, in which he scored eighteen goals and fourteen assists. Last season he impressed in the Champions League, scoring twice in seven games and providing four assists. He also made his debut for the Brazilian national team, with whom he hopes to play at the World Cup in Qatar in November.
