Ajax separates from coach Schreuder – reference to strong squad despite departures

“No progress seen”

Ajax Amsterdam has parted ways with coach Alfred Schreuder. According to the club, the contract of the former Hoffenheim coach, which would have been valid until 2024, has already been terminated with immediate effect. The Eredivisie champions are without a win in the new year and have not won a single in their last seven games. The capital city have drawn their opponents six times since November.

“It’s a painful decision, but also a necessary one,” commented Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar. “After a good start to the season, we then lost a lot of points unnecessarily.” The team’s game under Schreuder was also “inconsistent”.

Schreuder-Aus at Ajax: A master squad “despite the many transfers”

Actually, Amsterdam went into the long World Cup break with confidence, before which Ajax was in second place. Vulnerabilities should be addressed over time. Instead, van der Sar has to sum up Schreuder’s work: “In recent weeks it has become increasingly clear that he could not turn the tide, while we believe that we have a strong squad worthy of a championship despite the many transfers. We’ve lost a lot of points in the past few weeks and unfortunately we haven’t seen any progress.”

Ajax had made numerous key players in the summer transfer window. The club received 216 million euros with transfers and reinvested 113 million in new players. With Anthony (for 95 million euros to Manchester United) a new record sale was even recorded. Lisandro Martínez (Man Utd), Sébastien Haller (BVB) and Ryan Gravenberch (FC Bayern) also left the club before the season.
