Ajax presents Hedwiges Maduro: ‘His specific qualities fit perfectly into what we had in mind’ | Dutch football

Hedwiges Maduro will definitely start working at Ajax. The former midfielder is taken over from PhD student Almere City and will assist the new head coach Maurice Steijn. After attracting Said Bakkati earlier, the technical staff of the team from Amsterdam is complete for next season.

Maduro is regarded as one of the greatest coaching talents in the Netherlands and was coveted by various premier league clubs. However, the former player of Ajax, Valencia and Sevilla, among others, has chosen to build his career steadily in recent years. Maduro combined his work as an analyst for ESPN with a job as an assistant to the Juniors, the Orange under 18, the U21 team of Almere City and since 2021 as an assistant to the club from Flevoland.

As Alex Pastoor’s right-hand man, Maduro contributed to Almere City’s first promotion in history. FC Emmen was defeated in the final of the play-offs. Pastor advised Maduro against leaving for Ajax during the ceremony in Almere, but the 38-year-old former international could not resist the call from Amsterdam.

With the arrival of Maduro, Ajax’s staff is complete. The team from Amsterdam has pinned their hopes on Maurice Steijn as the new head coach. The native of The Hague surprisingly led Sparta to sixth place in the Eredivisie last season. Said Bakkati will also assist Steijn. He previously worked as an assistant at Jong Ajax and was Dick Advocaat’s right-hand man at ADO Den Haag last season.
