Ajax player Steven Berghuis slaps a bystander when he leaves the stadium: “I shouldn’t have done that”

When leaving the FC Twente stadium, Ajax player Steven Berghuis could not control himself. Just before boarding the player bus, he dealt a big blow to someone who was behind the fences, presumably a supporter of Twente.

It is still unclear what made Berghuis so furious. According to NOS would have hit Berghuis after a racist remark towards teammate Brian Brobbey. Brobbey who would have been called “cancer black”.

Dozens of supporters of the home club were behind fences at the Ajax player bus. Images show how Berghuis dives over a fence and lashes out.

Berghuis has now announced that he regrets the blow. “I regret my action, I should not have done this,” he writes in a press statement. “After every away game we get a lot of curses thrown at us at the bus, while we make time to sign autographs to fans who ask for it.”

“I’m used to it now, but people think they can shout anything. My reaction doesn’t solve anything, I understand that too. It’s not good, I have an exemplary function as an Ajax player.”

Ajax has also spoken with Berghuis. “Steven reacted in the wrong way. He quickly made this known to John Heitinga and immediately apologized. Upon arrival at the Arena, he had a conversation with Heitinga, Edwin van der Sar and Sven Mislintat,” Ajax writes. “The conclusion is that his reaction was wrong and that Ajax rejects it. He has been fined.”

Just before the blow, Ajax had ended the season disappointingly with a 3-1 defeat against FC Twente.
