Ajax loses catch-up game against Feyenoord – more mislintat allegations

Further allegations against Mislintat

The Dutch champions Feyenoord Rotterdam clearly won the game at arch-rival Ajax Amsterdam, which was abandoned in the 55th minute on Sunday when the score was 3-0. After the remaining 35 minutes of play were made up on Wednesday from 2 p.m., the score was 4-0 for the guests in front of empty stands. Eredivisie top scorer Santiago Gimenez (22) added a third goal (59′) to his brace from the first half (9′; 18′). Igor Paixão (37th) ensured the comfortable half-time lead on Sunday.

For Ajax it is the heaviest home defeat since the introduction of the Eredivisie in 1956. Only in the Champions League against SSC Napoli last year (1:6) has there been a more bitter slap in front of their own audience since then. The last time the record champions lost in national competitions was in 1950, 0:5 against AVV DOS Utrecht in the Eerste Klasse B.

The result adds to Ajax’s weak start to the season, which is in 14th place with just five points after five games. Three-packer Gimenez now has nine goals, more than the entire Ajax team (seven). With 14 points, Feyenoord has now caught up with the top duo PSV and AZ Alkmaar (15), who each have one game less. Both teams have won all of their five league games so far. To the Eredivisie table

The referee stopped the game in Amsterdam on Sunday in accordance with league rules after fans fired flares onto the field twice. There were no visiting fans present at the game. Both Ajax and their opponent FC Volendam, who were actually scheduled for Thursday, had filed urgent proceedings – without success. Volendam chairman Jan Smit complained: “This is unfair competition. Both Ajax and FC Volendam do not agree with this ridiculous decision.”

Ajax coach Maurice Steijn said after the game (quoted via “orange football“): “We wanted to try something from the start, but after the 0:4 the game was over. It is what it is – that wasn’t enough today. A lot happened this week. I’m glad that we can close this chapter and focus on RKC.” How long Steijn, who only arrived in the summer, will stay on the sidelines at Ajax is unclear. Experienced Steven Berghuis (31) replied to “ESPNWhen asked what he thought of the coach, he said: “That’s a difficult question. Others have to judge that.”

More allegations against Ajax Amsterdam’s ex-sports director Mislintat

In addition to the sporting failures of this season, Ajax has had to deal with the affair surrounding technical director Sven Mislintat, who has since been released, in recent days. In addition to sporting criticism of his transfers, which have so far had little impact, the 50-year-old ex-sports director of VfB Stuttgart is accused of having caused a possible conflict of interest at the listed club when Croatian national player Borna Sosa (25) moved from the Swabians to Amsterdam. The background is Mislintat’s participation in the football data analysis company “Matchmetrics”. The player consulting agency “AKA Global GmbH” has also been involved in this company since the summer and recently arranged the move for a transfer fee of 8 million euros.

The consulting firm and its owner Arthur Beck are the subject of new allegations against Mislintat. The manager is said to have asked most of the twelve new Ajax players signed to move to “AKA Global”. “Sosa’s transfer seems to be the tip of the iceberg,” Gerben Everts, director of the Dutch shareholders’ association VEB, told the news agency “NOS“.

Everts continued: “There are signs that more is going on. There seem to be emails to players saying shortly before the transfer that they wouldn’t be able to make their dream transfer if they didn’t move to Beck. That may be common in the football industry, but that cannot be the case in a listed company.”

The association had initiated an independent investigation into the case, and Mislintat itself announced that it wanted to cooperate fully. Ajax announced that the separation from the Dortmund native, who was only signed in May, was not related to the allegations.
