The sporting defeat of Ajax against the amateurs of Hercules also has a financial tail. The Amsterdam club has decided to compensate the 325 supporters who saw their club lose in the Galgenwaard stadium. The fans will receive a refund for their ticket and their bus travel will be reimbursed.
“Due to the poor performance of our team, you undoubtedly experienced the Hercules – Ajax match as painful,” the club told fans in an email. “We share that pain and are deeply ashamed.”
“In consultation with the playing group and technical staff, it has been decided that all away supporters who have purchased a ticket will be compensated. This means that we will reimburse your match ticket and bus travel. The amount paid for this will soon be in your account. This compensation brings back the memory of the painful evening, but doing nothing was not an option. Thank you for your unconditional support.”
Ajax has never before been eliminated from the KNVB Cup by an amateur club.
