Ajax extends contract of coach John Heitinga

Ajax has reached an agreement with John Heitinga about the extension of his contract, which ran until June 30, 2023. The new agreement of the trainer of Jong Ajax will take effect retroactively on July 1, 2022 and will run until June 30. 2025.

John Heitinga has been head coach of Ajax’s U23 team since the summer of 2021. He went through the youth academy at Ajax and played seven seasons in the first. He then played for Atlético Madrid, Everton, Fulham and Hertha BSC and Heitinga returned to Ajax in 2015.

A year later he stopped playing football, but stayed with Ajax. He had various coaching positions within the youth academy and was assistant to Marcel Keizer at Jong Ajax in the 2016/2017 season. Between 2017 and 2021, Heitinga trained Ajax’s highest youth team, the current U18.

In his first season as head coach in professional football, Jong Ajax finished in seventh place in the first division. It earned Heitinga a nomination for the prize of best trainer of the first division. In addition, Heitinga has seen sixteen youth players make their professional debut in Jong Ajax since his appointment as head coach and five players from the selection of Jong Ajax made their first minutes in Ajax 1.
