The Ajax football players have to deal with Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League. They were paired with the English top club during the draw at the headquarters of the world football association UEFA in Nyon.
Ajax will first play a home game on March 19 or 20. The second leg will follow a week later in London. Chelsea has won the league title in the past four years. Aniek Nouwen is under contract with the club, but is temporarily out due to a serious knee injury.
The Ajax football players are the first Dutch women’s team ever to reach the quarter-finals of the most prestigious European club tournament, after finishing second in the group with group winner Paris Saint-Germain, AS Roma and Bayern Munich.
The winner of the diptych between Ajax and Chelsea will face Norwegian Brann or FC Barcelona in the semi-final, the club for which Dutch international Esmee Brugts plays. Those matches are scheduled for April 20, 21, 27 or 28. The final is scheduled for May 25 in San Mamés, the stadium of Club Athletic from Bilbao.
