Ajax competes with Benfica for a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League

Ajax will compete with Benfica on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Trainer Erik ten Hag has an almost fit selection for the game in a sold-out Johan Cruijff ArenA. Edson Álvarez is also back. The Mexican was sick last week.

Ajax can reach the quarterfinals of a European tournament for the fourth time in six seasons. The club stranded three years ago in the semi-finals of the Champions League. In 2017 Ajax lost to Manchester United in the final of the Europa League. Last season, AS Roma was too strong in the quarterfinals of the Europa League over two matches.

The first match between Ajax and Benfica ended in a draw (2-2) three weeks ago. Goals in away matches are no longer the deciding factor this season if there is a tie after two matches. If there is no winner after regular time, there will be an extension and possibly another penalty shootout.
