Ajax benefits optimally from PSV’s loss of points and can still hope for the Champions League

Ajax can still hope for second place in the Eredivisie. The team from Amsterdam won themselves against FC Utrecht (3-1) with some difficulty, while PSV got stuck at 3-3 against sc Heerenveen. As a result, Ajax can still beat PSV next weekend.

The last home match of the season started for Ajax with the farewell of Maarten Stekelenburg. The 40-year-old goalkeeper announced earlier this week that he would retire from football. He saw that Brian Brobbey destroyed a great header opportunity by heading the ball into the hands of goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas. Dusan Tadic also had the 1-0 on his shoe moments later.

The captain also had his sights off and missed. Steven Bergwijn’s visor was sharp. After a combination with Tadic and Owen Wijndal, the ball came at his feet and he hit: 1-0. It was not easy for Brobbey since. He extended Bergwijn’s cross, but the header hit the post.

Ajax’s start of the second half was dramatic. Anastasios Douvikas got too much space from the defenders and put Utrecht 1-1. The grumbling in the Johan Cruijff Arena started, as PSV was 3-1 against sc Heerenveen. If Ajax would win, the battle for second place would be even more exciting. The team from Amsterdam kept their faith and came to 2-1. Mohammed Kudus laid back on Brobbey and this opportunity was not to be missed.

The danger from Utrecht had not yet passed, as defender Mike van der Hoorn (former Ajax) headed hard on the post from a corner. Davy Klaassen came in and made Ajax 3-1. That means that the team from Amsterdam can still hope for CL football. PSV played 3-3 against sc Heerenveen, so the difference was only three points. Ajax also has a better goal difference. Ajax closes the season against FC Twente in Enschede, while PSV visits Alkmaar.

Setup Ajax: Rulli; Rensch, Timber, Hato, Wijndal (Klaassen/67); Álvarez, Taylor, Bergwijn; Kudus, Brobbey (Godts/83) , Tadic
