Football club Ajax and the family of Abdelhak Nouri have reached an agreement about the compensation that Ajax must pay to the Nouri family. Ajax pays a net compensation of 7.85 million euros to the family of the footballer who was struck by a cardiac arrest in 2017. The club announced that on Monday a press release announced. Ajax will also continue to reimburse the costs that the family has to incur for the nursing and care of Nouri. The arbitration case, which the Nouri family had brought before the KNVB, has been terminated by the settlement.
Abdelhak Nouri (24) suffered a cardiac arrest in the summer of 2017 in a friendly match against Werder Bremen, as a result of which the talented midfielder suffered permanent brain damage. Less than a year later, in June 2018, Ajax took responsibility for the permanent damage that the player had incurred. General manager Edwin van der Sar then admitted that the treatment of Nouri after he became unwell had been inadequate. It took several minutes for him to receive chest compressions. Nouri has been in a low state of consciousness ever since and is cared for by his family at home.
Van der Sar responded with satisfaction on Monday to the agreement, but also said that he realized “that the suffering for Abdelhak and his loved ones is not over”. Mohammed Nouri, Abdelhak’s father, says that in addition to many difficult moments, the family has also delivered “a lot of precious” in recent years. The realization that for many people Nouri is “a personification of togetherness and fraternization,” he calls a “hugely comforting thought.”
