Ajax Amsterdam: Steijn becomes the new coach

The Dutch soccer record champions Ajax Amsterdam have found a new head coach. As the club announced on Wednesday, Maurice Steijn should lead the dethroned champion back to the national top.

The 49-year-old has been given a contract until 2026 and will succeed John Heitinga. Steijn had recently worked successfully at league rivals Sparta Rotterdam.

“Maurice has now been a professional football coach for around 20 years, including ten years as head coach. The results have exceeded expectations at all the clubs he has worked for,” said technical director Sven Mislintat: “He has worked with his teams on several occasions shown he’s a real overperformer. He’s ready for a step up.”

Ajax had disappointed in third place in the Eredivisie last season and lost their regular place in the Champions League.
