New role for ex-scorer
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar joins Ajax Amsterdam in a new role. The former goalscorer will move into the management of the Dutch top club in the future. After the departure of sporting director Marc Overmars, Huntelaar will support technical director Gerry Hamstra, who works closely with coach Erik ten Hag. From July 2022, the 38-year-old will also take part in courses to further develop himself for his new area of responsibility. Huntelaar has a contract with Ajax until 2024. He ended his professional career after FC Schalke 04 were relegated in the summer of 2021.
“Ajax have stayed in touch with Klaas-Jan since his move to Schalke. We knew about his interests and his ambitions to become technical director at a professional club. That’s why he’s looked behind the scenes a few times since the summer and attended meetings of the management team and the board of directors, for example,” explained club boss Edwin van der Sar. The ex-keeper is convinced that Huntelaar, “even if he is new in this role, will make an immediate difference”.
With Neres, Milik & de Ligt: The most expensive Ajax sales of the Overmars era
Huntelaar, who had scored 158 times in 257 Ajax games, said: “I’ve always been interested in what happens off the pitch at clubs and I’d like to expand my knowledge in this area. This is possible with the path that Ajax offers me. I’m happy to be back and I’m excited to see what will happen in the near future.” The ex-national player also wants to work on his coaching diploma.
