fee released
Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed the agreement to sign Calvin Bassey. The Italian-born Nigerian, who had been Glasgow Rangers’ starting left-back since last autumn, arrives for a Dutch-released fee that makes the 22-year-old one of the most expensive departures in the Scottish league. His rise is set to continue with a contract in the Eredivise until 2027. It was only almost exactly two years ago that the national player was even given a first market value.
Born on New Year’s Eve 1999, Bassey came from the offspring of Leicester City and has slowly but surely grown into the endurance runner of the dethroned Premiership champions in Glasgow since 2020. According to Ajax, the fee for the “Super Eagle” with an English passport will initially be EUR 23 million, which could increase to a total of EUR 26.5 million with bonuses. A sum that could also have come to BVB. Dortmund were considered to be interested in the left winger.
With the transfer volume that Ajax is now raising, Bassey is almost on par with the Scottish league’s most expensive exit to date. Kieran Tierney had cost even more when he joined Arsenal from Celtic in 2019. But even the basic fee puts Bassey in second place in the record statistics of all Scottish football exports, which are again dominated by Celtic. For the Rangers, the sale is a historic top value.
