Air rifle Ria gets her own trophy in Tiburg

The municipality of Tilburg will investigate whether there can be a photo competition with a trophy in memory of air rifle Ria. Last year, the Tilburg icon died at the age of 101. Ria van Dijk visited the shooting gallery at the Tilburg funfair for eighty years and shot a photo of herself every year.

The official name should be the “Ria van Dijk aka Airgun Ria trophy”, explains initiator Ron Antens of GroenLinks. His motion was passed unanimously in the Tilburg city council. “I have been in contact with the family and they wanted Ria’s full name to be included in the name for the trophy.”

Typical Tilburg
Before the prize is a fact, the municipality will first investigate how the competition should be organised. “It has to be the most beautiful photo of the fair, not just of the shooting gallery. I still want to discuss with the fair team how it should work.”

Alderman Marcelle Hendrickx announced during the city council on Thursday evening that he found it typical Tilburg to link such a match to such a characteristic Tilburg woman. The council therefore wishes to implement the motion.

The prize is therefore awarded after a photo competition about the fair. “We want to make participation available to the widest possible audience,” explains Antens. “But yeah, we don’t want to get thousands of photos either, so we’re going to look at criteria.”

According to the parties, the trophy should become a real Tilburg symbol. An artist from Tilburg has to make the design. “They really get a free hand in the design,” says Antens. “That is a new connection between the cultural sector and the fair.”
