Lifeguard Obaida Laila also experienced a situation where a group of young people had taken beer, while the house rules state that alcohol is not allowed in connection with the safety of other bathers. “Those young people were quite drunk. After the second warning, I got the idea that something was not right,” says Laila, who indicates that the group swam away from him. “They didn’t want to listen to us and I thought that was a shame.”
According to the pool employees, the unsafe situation also manifests itself through contact with the staff. “Last time it was really necessary to call the police. In the end I was able to get those boys away with great difficulty”, the lifeguard continues.
The initiative of the training was not only raised by the management of the swimming pool. Zantingh: “I asked myself how to deal with these situations, because you don’t want to get into a fight.” The lifeguard finds it difficult to remain calm in such a situation. “I am here for the safety of the visitors, but my own safety must also be guaranteed. I think that is important,” concludes the lifeguard.
The course lasts one day. The pool will be open again tomorrow.
