Agent saves seal and now organizes crowdfunding for care
The animal urgently needed help and was taken to Sea Life. The Center thanked the local police for their intervention and in particular Inspector Vercruysse, who had been able to save the animal through his immediate intervention. The gray seal was therefore appropriately named after the daughter of Inspector Vercruysse, namely: Zytha.
5,500 euros
But caring for a seal costs a lot of money. Steve Vermote, General Manager of Sea Life: “It is true that we are still doing this without subsidies or any other form of government support. Rehabilitating a seal costs an average of 5,500 euros. This means that the animal is checked several times a week by our veterinarian, the first care is administered and, if necessary, operations are also performed to stabilize the animal. Seals that end up in our hospital stay with us for an average of 2 months before they can be released back into the North Sea.”

Zytha Run
Inspector Vercruysse, who was clearly concerned about Zytha’s fate, has therefore single-handedly set up a crowdfunding campaign in which he will walk to the police station in Middelkerke every day for 2 weeks, from 8 to 22 May. Inspector Vercruysse walks 36 kilometers every day and is sponsored by local traders and friends. “The people at Sea Life do a wonderful job, but I was surprised that this was selfless. That is why I also wanted to contribute in the form of the Zytha Run. Every contribution, small or large, that goes to Sea Life to support this shelter, will make a big difference for these beautiful animals,” said Inspector Vercruysse.
