Only Musiala more dangerous
National coach Hansi Flick will announce his squad for the 2022 World Cup next Thursday. A name that is mentioned in the TM community from time to time as a candidate for a nomination for the DFB team, but most recently played in the U20 with the Germany jersey in 2011 is Pascal Groß. The 31-year-old midfielder has long been a regular in the Premier League at Brighton & Hove Albion. At Transfermarkt, advisor Tolga Dirican from the agency “TDS SPORTS” advocates a nomination for his client.
“Pascal has impressed in England for years with excellent performances in the best league in the world. In the current season, too, he consistently delivers performances at a very high level,” said Dirican. “I would like his achievements to be recognized in Germany as well. In my opinion, Pascal deserved to go to Qatar for the World Cup with the German national team thanks to his performance, skills and humility.”
The central and attacking midfield, where Groß is mainly at home, is one of the most competitive parts of the DFB team. With Joshua Kimmich, Kai Havertz, Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, who was injured for a long time, Ilkay Gündogan, Leon Goretzka, Marco Reus and Mario Götze, the competition for Groß is fierce. However, Flick’s provisional squad list published by “Bild” also includes players such as Maximilian Arnold, Rani Khedira, Anton Stach, Julian Weigl, Christoph Kramer, Julian Brandt and Emre Can, from whom Groß would not have to hide in terms of performance.

Only 3 Germans with more Premier League games than Pascal Groß
Born in Mannheim, he moved to Brighton in 2017 for 3 million euros from FC Ingolstadt 04, for which he also impressed in the Bundesliga. With the “Seagulls”, the standard specialist quickly became the darling of the public and is called “Kaiser” there. Since then, Groß has recorded 22 goals and 29 assists in 168 games in the Premier League. Among the German record players in the English upper house, only Robert Huth (322), Dietmar Hamann (268) and Mesut Özil (184) have more appearances.
He has already had seven goals this season – more than last year. Of all the German midfielders in Europe’s top leagues, only Musiala is more dangerous, has 13 points for FC Bayern in the Bundesliga (8 goals/5 assists). Groß does not play for a top club, but for an underdog in an even stronger league. The right-footed player showed himself to be flexible: in addition to the central and attacking midfield, he also acted as a hanging striker and in the position on the right in the back four that had not been permanently occupied in the DFB team for months. He scored one goal each against Chelsea and Wolverhampton.

“I tried to develop myself every year, to become a better footballer. I had to do that to be successful in this league. I’m a much better footballer than five years ago,” Groß said in an interview with “Sky” in August. At the beginning of June he had extended the contract to Brighton until 2024. He described a nomination for the DFB team as a “lifetime dream”: “I am very proud to be German and a big Germany fan – always, no matter what game, no matter what tournament.”
