Mansour was in charge in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. High commander Taysir al-Jabari was killed on Friday.
The total number of deaths in the Gaza Strip from Israeli airstrikes has risen to at least 32, Gaza’s health ministry said on Saturday. At least 215 people have also been injured since Friday. At least six children are among the dead, according to the Palestinian ministry.
In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Israeli army carried out several actions in the West Bank. At least 20 members of Islamic Jihad were arrested, according to Israel.
Several children have been killed in an Israeli attack near the Jabalya refugee camp, Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza. Israel says it has “irrefutable” evidence that the children were killed by a failed rocket launch by Islamic Jihad, which has a large presence in Gaza. Palestinian militants have also fired more than 400 rockets at Israel in recent days. Israeli emergency services report that there have been no known casualties in these attacks.
Resumed air strikes
Israel resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Saturday after an earlier series of attacks the day before. According to the Israeli army, 15 people were killed, including al-Jabari.
The unrest in Gaza started Monday after the arrest of two senior members of Islamic Jihad. The pair were arrested in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The organization then threatened attacks, after which the Israeli army cordoned off areas on the edge of the coastal strip for several days and raised the alert level.
The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Monday to discuss airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. The United Arab Emirates, Ireland, France, Norway and China had requested this.
