WIESBADEN (dpa-AFX) – The corona crisis continues to put pressure on the training figures in Germany. Last year, 467,100 young people concluded a new training contract than in 2020, as the Federal Statistical Office reported on Wednesday based on preliminary figures. However, the level from the pre-crisis year 2019 (513,300 new contracts) was again not reached.
With 465,700 new trainees, the Corona crisis year 2020 marked an all-time low. Basically, the dual training system suffers from the competition of academic courses and the declining number of school graduates. The number of applicants has been declining for years. In addition, numerous information events at schools and internships were canceled due to the Corona crisis.
In 2021, the liberal professions in particular were able to convince more young people to do an apprenticeship. In the medical and legal practices, 6.5 percent more began their training, while in the public sector 2.1 percent fewer new contracts were concluded.
Due to the low numbers in previous years, the total number of trainees at the end of 2021 fell by 2.4 percent to 1.258 million. The companies of the chambers of industry and commerce continue to provide the largest proportion of apprenticeships with a good 710,000 trainees, followed by the skilled trades with almost 357,000 people./ceb/DP/jha
