Again defeats for German boxers at the World Cup

The German women’s relay is still waiting for the first victory at the boxing world championships in Istanbul.

After Leonie Müller from Heidelberg, Maxi Klötzer and Zeina Nassar are also eliminated. The 21-year-old from Chemnitz lost to the more robust Filipino Aira Cordero Villegas in the light flyweight up to 50 kilograms with 0:5 punk judges’ votes. The third of this year’s U22 European Championship was constantly in attack mode, but didn’t score enough goals.

Nassar also failed in her first fight. The 24-year-old Berliner lost to Turkey’s Hatice Akbas in the bantamweight class up to 54 kilograms, also clearly with 0:5 judges’ votes.

Fighting with a headscarf (hijab) under her head protection, Nassar had problems finding the right distance to hit. The physically stronger Turkish hit less often but scored more. “Nevertheless, Zeina has shown that she is on the right track. She is mentally very strong and a candidate for the 2024 Olympic Games,” said team manager Martin Volke.

Three German boxers are still in the tournament. 22-year-old Lena Marie Büchner from Assel in Lower Saxony is ill and cannot compete. 310 athletes from 73 countries take part in the World Cup.
