Again call for crash barrier on spot where Sanne and Hebe crashed

If it is up to the mayor and aldermen of the municipality of Den Bosch, there will be a guardrail on the spot where the missing Sanne and Hebe died last October. The council made this known after questions from the city council.

At the end of last year, the House of Representatives already voted on the arrival of a crash barrier in the bend at the Empel junction. The proposal failed to win a majority. It later emerged that Minister Mark Harbers of Infrastructure and Water Management had advised MPs against voting in favor of the amendment.

According to Harbers, the connecting curve of the A59 with the A2 does not emerge as a very dangerous place in the annual analysis. “And there is not enough money to tackle all problem areas.”

Another accident
At the end of March, the discussion flared up again when another car ended up in the water in the same bend. This time not with a fatal outcome, the driver climbed out of the car himself. Nevertheless, it was reason enough for the BVNL party to ask parliamentary questions again.

The same happened locally by party chairman Judith Hendrickx of De Bossche Groenen. Shortly after the second accident, she asked whether the Board is prepared to urge Minister Harbers to install a crash barrier.

The college is now responding to that question by letter. “We see that the media attention after the first accident has led to strong reactions. Understandable after such a great loss. And the second accident, fortunately with less serious consequences, also has a major impact on those involved and their loved ones.”

Urgent request
So the college is happy to accede to the request. “Of course we are prepared to also urge the minister to make an adjustment. We hope that our signal will reach even more weight than the two signals from the House of Representatives.”

Earlier examples from the region are cited. “A traffic situation must be safe. That is why we have already adapted several traffic situations after an accident, even though the guidelines were met.” With this, the Commission refers to the conclusion of Rijkswaterstaat that a crash barrier is not necessary in the bend in question according to the rules.
