After unauthorized release: Beyoncé removes sample with Kelis

When Beyoncé’s album RENAISSANCE was released, the record immediately made headlines — but not just the ones the singer wanted. Recently she had to change her lyrics to “Heated” due to offensive statements. Now she’s also removing a sample from singer Kelis, who claims she didn’t give Beyoncé permission for the release.

Kelis made it absolutely clear that she didn’t give Beyoncé permission to use any samples – albeit very brief ones – on the song “Energy.” Kelis’ anger was directed primarily at Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, who wrote and produced the two Kelis songs “Milkshake” and “Get Along With You” and thus owned the publication rights.

Kelis isn’t just mad at Beyoncé

Kelis wrote on Instagram: “I’m stunned too as the level of disrespect and complete ignorance from all three parties involved is amazing.” It’s a wonder he’s still standing, but Pharrell knows better. It’s a direct hit at me, he does this kind of thing all the time. It’s very petty – very, very, very – and the reality is that it’s frustrating.”

Beyoncé does not delete all Kelis samples

Now, online users have observed how the Kelis samples seem to be gradually being removed from “Energy”. Additionally, Spotify briefly had trouble loading both Beyoncé’s Renaissance tracklist and Kelis’ discography. Spotify users claim that the two are related. Now music industry veteran Naima Cochrane announced that a drum part can still be heard on the track and only a vocal section, which some fans have attributed to Kelis, has been removed.
