After the earthquake disaster: sporting events in Turkey suspended

After the earthquake disaster in the Turkish-Syrian border region, all sporting events in Turkey have been cancelled. This was announced by the Turkish Sports Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu on Monday (February 6, 2023).

“All national sports organizations scheduled to take place in our country have been suspended until further notice”Kasapoglu tweeted.

The Turkish Football Association TFF had previously canceled all games. “We extend our condolences to the families, loved ones and nation of our citizens and wish those injured a speedy recovery.”said the association.

More than 1900 dead in Turkey

After the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the death toll has risen to more than 1,900. 1,121 people were killed in Turkey, the civil protection service Afad announced on Monday afternoon. More than 7500 people were injured.

Thousands of buildings collapsed in the tremors in south-east Turkey alone. Completely destroyed streets could be seen on videos from several cities. In Syria, the death toll rose to around 800.
