On Thursday afternoon, Mainz announced that a total of 19 members of the fully immunized licensed player area (players, coaches, staff) had been infected with the corona virus and had gone into isolation. The 05ers have now announced that they have submitted an application to the German Football League (DFL) to postpone the game.
Heidel: “No operational goalkeeper”
“A total of 13 players are missing, 12 of them from the licensed squad. Among them are all the goalkeepers,” confirmed sporting director Christian Heidel. “It’s a bit difficult to play a Bundesliga game with such a squad.”
And further: “We are now assuming that the application will be approved. However, the written answer from the DFL is still pending.”
Don’t blame the players
Heidel had no explanation for the outbreak. “As of now, we assume that the infections happened around the away game at Union Berlin,” he said. In any case, you can’t “blame any player”.
The encounter of the 25th matchday is scheduled for Sunday (3:30 p.m.). According to the DFL rules of the game, an application for a transfer can be granted if fewer than 16 players are available. Among them must be at least nine licensed players and among them one goalkeeper. Injured or banned actors count as available and not in the absences.
