US synchronized swimmer Anita Alvarez, who passed out underwater on Wednesday and was rescued by her coach, will not compete in the free program at Friday’s World Championships.
The 25-year-old was no longer on the updated start list for the team competition in the afternoon, she will be replaced by Yujin Chang.
Alvarez had to undergo a comprehensive examination on Friday morning, as a representative of the world association FINA explained. Nothing was initially known about the result.
It wasn’t the first time Alvarez had passed out during a competition. Last year she had to be rescued at a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games.
