But a hoped-for decrease in the amount of litter has not materialized. In the summer months on the coast, the situation was sometimes dire.

Last summer there was already a pilot project with deposits on bottles and cans at four beach bars in Bredene. 77% of the cans were returned. There was up to 40% less litter on the beach. The mayor, Steve Vandenberghe, has been arguing for a deposit from the opposition in the Flemish parliament for six years.

“I’m glad that the Flemish government finally realizes that this is the only method to significantly reduce litter. It’s just a shame it took so long.”
