The women’s handball Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has released coach André Fuhr with immediate effect.
The club announced this on Monday (September 19, 2022). The 51-year-old Fuhr had previously been sharply criticized by players and was already absent from the away game SportsUnion Neckarsulm. BVB department head Andreas Heiermann told the “Ruhr Nachrichten” that Fuhr was “under no circumstances released”.
This is the case two days later. Borussia Dortmund but emphasized in the Monday message: “The decision to release André Fuhr is expressly not associated with prejudice.”
Terminations without notice cause an uproar at BVB
Most recently, the two national players Mia Zschocke and Amelie Berger resigned without notice and, among other things, turned on the contact point for violence and abuse in top-class sport.
A crisis meeting had been scheduled for September 12, attended by Zschocke and Berger, who were currently on sick leave, department heads Heiermann, club president Reinhard Rauball and representatives of the independent contact point for violence and abuse.
Borussia Dortmund’s work-up is still ongoing
As BVB emphasized on Monday, “the processes are currently being processed conscientiously and thoroughly”. The club is still “in dialogue with the contact point against violence in sport, which had been contacted by several players,” it said.
Dortmund initially did not want to accept the immediate dismissals of Zschocke and Berger. BVB has now declared: “Borussia Dortmund has meanwhile informed the players Mia Zschocke and Amelie Berger that they will agree to their personal change request – without acknowledging any legal obligation.”
