Villarreal FC has signed its former coach Marcelino, who resigned from Olympique Marseille in September, on a long-term basis. On Monday, the Spaniards announced the 48-year-old’s signature until 2026. On Tuesday, the trainer, who was active with the team from Castello between 2013 and 2016, will complete his first training session and introduce himself at a press conference.
In Marseille, Marcelino only took over at the start of the season, but found himself unable to continue the job. The background was hostility from fan circles that greeted the sporting leadership at a meeting on Monday. There was talk of a “war” that would be waged until those responsible for the club resigned (to the report in the TM archive).
