After rain chaos: Medvedev follows Rune in the Rome final

World number three Daniil Medvedev and 20-year-old Dane Holger Rune will contest the final at the ATP Masters in Rome on Sunday.

After a rain break of almost five hours in the meantime, Medvedev defeated last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) 7: 5, 7: 5. Rune had previously won the Scandinavian duel against the Norwegian Casper Ruud 6:7, 6:4, 6:2.

Medvedev and Rune have only faced each other once before, in the quarter-finals in Monaco Rune prevailed in two sets at the beginning of April.

The Dane is playing the eighth ATP final of his career in Rome, the third this year after his tournament victory in Munich and his final defeat in Monaco against Andrej Rublev. In the quarter-finals in Rome he sent defending champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia) home.

Medvedev is aiming for the 20th title of his career in the final, the sixth at Masters level. This year he already won the 1000 tournament in Miami, Rune celebrated his biggest success to date in Paris-Bercy in 2022. In the semi-final against Ruud he managed his first win in the fifth duel with the Norwegian.
