After Poperinge and Wevelgem, a caravan was also stolen in Bruges

Thieves broke down the fence at the back of the business. They were able to take one caravan along the cycle path to the B-Park shopping centre. They left a second caravan behind when they were caught by a cyclist and the police arrived on the scene. “We were on the lookout to see if they would come and pick up that second caravan, because it was ready. But they didn’t do that anymore,” says manager Henk Verdonck. He placed some concrete blocks where the fence is broken to prevent new thefts.

Tighten security

The thefts started at the end of August, first in Poperinge and then also in Wevelgem. It is probably the same gang, which mainly operates in the border region. The federation recommends further tightening security. “We advise our members to focus more on infrastructure, cameras and extra lighting. Attracting people who can spend the night at a camper place at the companies can also deter thieves. Unfortunately, these are additional costs for the sector,” concludes Frédéric. François from the Belgian Caravan, Camper and Motorhome Association (BCCMA).
