Writer Paul Auster had to cope with the death of his granddaughter Ruby at the end of last year. Now his son Daniel Auster, who may have been responsible for the little girl’s death, has also passed away. The reason for his death is said to have been a drug overdose.
Daniel Auster found dead at home after arrest
Daniel Auster died at the age of 44. On April 17, the ‘New York Trilogy’ author’s son was arrested by police on charges of killing his daughter, who was just 10 months old. Auster was released on bail.
Now he is said to have been found dead in his Brooklyn apartment. It is suspected that it was not a suicide, but an “accidental overdose”. His lawyer had previously told the court that Auster was in rehab and had recently sobered up.
Ruby Auster also died earlier from an overdose
The daughter of Daniel Auster and Zuzan Smith died of a heroin and fentanyl overdose that she was administered. According to the Daily Mail, Auster consumed heroin and then went to sleep. Ruby Auster, who had been lying by her father’s side, was dead when he woke up. The mother of the child was meanwhile at work.
Drug problems from a young age
The writer’s son is said to have had a long-standing drug problem and was on the police radar from a young age for theft and drug possession. Father and son have not maintained a good relationship with each other for years: they have become estranged, it is said. In the 90s, the younger Auster starred in the film adaptation of “Smoke”, for which Paul Auster was responsible for the script.
Paul Auster is one of the most famous writers of the 21st century. The now 75-year-old American became internationally known in the mid-1980s with his “New York Trilogy”. It was followed by titles like “Moon over Manhattan”, “Mr. Vertigo” and “The Music of Chance”. His books have been translated into over 40 languages. Auster also worked as a film director and screenwriter. In 2017 he published his current novel “4 3 2 1”.
