After heavy showers, an ‘old wives’ summer’ presents itself | Domestic

With heavy rain showers and possibly even hail, autumn has really arrived. That won’t last long, late summer will return: from Sunday it will be sunny and in the following days it can even reach 24 degrees. A real ‘old wives’ summer’.

Just hold on for a moment. Friday will be changeable and even stormy in some places, according to meteorologists Weather Plaza. The coastal areas and the north of the country in particular may experience showers with thunder and hail. It will not remain dry on Saturday either, but the sun will seize its chance between the showers. It will then be a maximum of 18 degrees. “During the evening hours, almost all showers will disappear, and the night will be clear. With decreasing winds it can cool down considerably, with temperatures that can drop to 6 or 7 degrees inland,” says meteorologist Jeroen Elferink.

On Sunday the weather really changes. After a fresh start, it will be a maximum of 19 degrees on the Wadden Islands and a pleasant 20 to locally 21 degrees inland. “A perfect day for outdoor activities or a visit to the terrace,” says Elferink.

In the days that follow, the temperature rises even further and it also becomes sunnier. On Monday the mercury will rise to 20 to 23 degrees, and on Tuesday it can even reach 24 degrees in the south of the country. “From Wednesday onwards, the uncertainty will increase in expectations. Until then, you can enjoy sunny and relatively warm late summer weather for at least a few days,” says the Weerplaza expert.

The story of the old wives’ summer

Such warm days in September are also called an ‘old wives’ summer’. That term refers to old knitting women and field spiders. The spiders produce long threads in calm late summer weather. During the clear and lengthening autumn nights, dew is deposited on the spider webs. When the sun rises, the drops on the threads glitter and sparkle.

Until the end of the 18th century, woman was the common word for woman. At that time it was thought that the beautiful strands were the hair of the goddesses of fate or female water spirits. They would have lost these hairs during the night. Because this only happens during quiet sunny days in the fall, it was called the old wives’ summer.
