After Flick, Schalke also lends Kerim Calhanoglu to SV Sandhausen

In Kerim Calhanoglu, FC Schalke 04 have loaned out another talent who only got a little playing time in the first half of the season. As first “sky” and the “WAZ” reported and was confirmed a short time later by the clubs, the 20-year-old left-back is temporarily moving to SV Sandhausen. Schalke had previously loaned Florian Flick (22) to 1. FC Nürnberg.

“Kerim expands our options in defense and midfield. At a young age, he already has experience from the Bundesliga, the 2nd division and the U20 national team,” said Mikayil Kabaca, sporting director at SVS. “We’re happy that Kerim will help us in the second half of the season. He comes from the ongoing game operations and wants to take the next step in his development with us. Thanks go to Schalke 04, Kerim and his agent for their willingness to accept this loan, which otherwise would not have come about.”

Schalke’s sporting director Peter Knäbel said: “We are convinced that regular playing time in the 2nd Bundesliga will help Kerim to take the next step in development. During his time at Schalke, Kerim not only repeatedly showed his talent in the Knappenschmiede and with the professionals, but also in the junior national teams.”

Okoroji is still out: Schalke’s Calhanoglu wants playing time in Sandhausen

Calhanoglu switched from TSG Hoffenheim’s U19s to the Royal Blues’ youth team in 2020. Hakan Calhanoglu’s cousin made his professional debut in March 2021 at the age of 18 years, six months and seven days for the Schalke pros under Dimitrios Grammozis in the Bundesliga. Since then, 17 games (0 goals/1 assist) have been added. This season, however, the native of Mannheim was mostly absent from the professional squad, but was increasingly on the field in the Regionalliga West in the Schalke reserve (11 games/1 goal/6 assists).

At SVS, Calhanoglu will compete with Arne Sicker (27) at the back left. Regular Chima Okoroji (25) has been out since the beginning of October with a broken metatarsal. Most recently, coach Alois Schwartz sometimes played with a back three and attacker Philipp Ochs (25) as a left rail player. Calhanoglu can also take this position. The U20 national player is contractually bound to Schalke until 2024.

I often found Flick good, I would have seen him as a rotation player in the team. At Calhanoglu, a loan makes a lot of sense. feeling even for 1.5 years. …
